Suspension is the least interchangeable hardware on a Ranger, and it is the category where owners most often shop for the wrong intent. There are two entirely separate jobs here: restoring a tired truck to how it rode when it was new, and deliberately raising it for tyre clearance and off-road geometry. The parts, the budget and the consequences differ.

Before anything else, identify your front end. Classic Rangers use a beam-axle front (Twin-I-Beam on two-wheel drive, Twin-Traction-Beam on four-wheel drive) with coil springs and radius arms; the 2019-onward trucks use independent coil-over struts. Every Ranger, all the way through the current truck, keeps a leaf-sprung solid rear axle — the coil-sprung Raptor being the exception.

North America got the compact Ranger from 1983 through 2011, went without one for the 2012–2018 model years, then received the midsize P375 Ranger for 2019–2023 and the redesigned next-generation truck from 2024. Parts almost never cross those boundaries.

2019–2023 (P375)

2024–2026 (next generation)

What to look for in Ranger suspension & lift

  • Dampers fail gradually and quietly — if the truck floats over dips or the rear paddles after a bump, shocks are the first thing to change.
  • Diagnose by symptom: clunk over bumps points at sway-bar links and bushings, wander points at ball joints and control-arm or radius-arm bushings, a sagging stance points at the rear leaf pack.
  • A front strut carries a loaded coil spring. Use a complete strut assembly or a proper spring compressor — never improvise.
  • Lift and level kits change geometry, tyre clearance and alignment specs. Decide the tyre size first, then the kit.
  • Rear shocks and leaf work are genuinely driveway jobs on a Ranger; front strut work is where most owners should stop and use a shop.

How do I know if my Ranger needs new shocks?
Shocks degrade slowly, so the tell is behaviour rather than a noise: the truck floats or wallows over dips, the rear keeps moving after a bump instead of settling in one motion, and the front dives more than it used to under braking. Visible fluid weeping down the shock body is a definite replacement.
What causes a clunk from the front of a Ranger over bumps?
The usual culprits, cheapest first, are worn sway-bar end links and sway-bar bushings, then control-arm bushings, then ball joints. On classic beam-axle trucks, worn radius-arm bushings are a common source of both clunk and steering wander.
Can I replace sagging rear leaf springs myself?
Rear leaf and shock work on a Ranger is a realistic driveway job with proper jack stands, and options run from an add-a-leaf to a complete replacement pack to helper springs. Front strut work is the one to be careful with, because the strut holds a compressed coil spring under serious load.
